Introducing John

Bio

John has been playing the Great Highland Bagpipes since he was 14 years old and since then he has been privileged to have played with various bands across the South Coast of England, including Rose & Thistle, Hampshire Caledonian, the RN Piping Society and the Isle of Wight Highland Pipes & Drums.

He has also been involved with other traveling/massed bands, and has competed up to Grade 3 within a full band, mini band and quartet setting.

John also has experience in playing the Snare Drum and being Drum Major on multiple occasions.

What made you learn?

“Coming from a Marching Band background John came across an old abandoned set of pipes in the band cupboard and tried to have a go. It didn’t go well. Being determined not to be defeated by what he thought was essentially a “bag of wind”, he decided to take up lessons, and so began his passion for the pipes”
